What is Bill C-31?
Bill C-31 is a bill that was passed on April 17, 1985. This bill reinstated the people that were enfranchised.
How this was achieved was through, re-applying for their treaty status. Subsection 6(1), 6(2) was also introduced and executed. This subsection has had a detrimental effect on our treaties.
What’s a 6(1), and 6(2)?
A 6(1) is a person who has both parents are treaty status.
A 6(2) is a person who has one parent that has treaty status or the father was not identified on the birth certificate.
